About Meols

Meols is a small but fascinating place and has a couple of interesting facts.

Viking Ties

Meols has rich ties to the Vikings. The name "Meols" itself is believed to have Viking origins. It is thought to derive from the Old Norse word "melr," which means dunes or sand hills. This reflects the geographical features of the area, which include sandy beaches and dunes which you can explore right outside The Hideaway!

Our local pub "The Railway" was discovered to have a Nordic ship underneath its car park during its construction in 1938 it remains buried there to this day.

Submerged Forest

In the 1890s the local authorities built the first sea wall. The rapidly eroding coastline was saved, but the sea wall changed the currents, and archaeological sites at Meols were buried in the sand.

The remains of a submerged forest off Dove Point (which is just around the corner from us!) have now also disappeared under the Irish Sea but they were visible until the spring of 1982.
